Experienced Farmer and Business Manager (2 positions) - Willamette Valley
The GeerCrest Foundation is a non-profit historic farm in the Willamette Valley that provides youth education in organic/sustainable practices. The foundation also demonstrates conservation through sustainable technologies and bridge to urban communities. Currently Jim Toler and his wife Erika represent the fifth generation owners of the farm but will be placing it into a perpetual trust within the non-profit corporation. The foundation is seeking to fill two positions-- one is an experienced farm person who can work with dairy goats, sheep and chickens as well as manage pastures; the other is a business management type who can work into the executive directorship. Both people will live on the farm and work very closely with the farm owners and the foundation board of directors to do program development and strategic planning. These people should be thinking of a life commitment.

Sauvie Island Organics is looking for an Apprentice!
Hiring for 2008-2009 Season
Farm structure: Sauvie Island Organics, LLC, (SIO) is an 18-acre farm located on Sauvie Island, 20 minutes from downtown Portland. We cultivate 10 acres, specializing in a diversity of high quality fruits and vegetables for the fresh direct market. SIO sells primarily to local restaurants and has a 200-member CSA. We offer a 17-month apprenticeship program to individuals with a serious interest in gaining the skills necessary to farm.Apprenticeship description: New apprentices arrive at the farm May 1st. During the first seven months of their time at SIO (May-Dec) they are considered first-year apprentices. During those months, first-years participate in and gain broad exposure to basic systems and operations on the farm. From January through the following September they are considered second-year apprentices and are offered the opportunity to take on greater responsibility in the management of the farm and to hone important farming skills. First-year and second-year apprentices overlap during the summer months (May thru Sept). This provides a great opportunity for second-years to serve as mentors to first-year apprentices, as well as providing the farm with a larger labor force during the peak months of the growing season.
Work schedule: The apprenticeship is,at its core, a working-learning experience. Our primary method for learning how to farm is, quite simply, by farming. Apprentices will also participate in various forms of classroom education throughout their time at SIO, including demonstrations, readings, discussions, special projects, and tours. The work schedule varies throughout the season, depending on the work load and seasonal demands.
Compensation
Stipend: A stipend is paid to each apprentice at the beginning of each month. Taxes are taken out of your stipend. The stipend increases throughout the 17-month apprenticeship. The total before taxes income for the 17-months is around $11,000.
Food: All apprentices have access to farm vegetables. As a general rule, produce in the fields is prioritized for CSA and restaurant; if you want to harvest something that is not on the house pallet in the cooler, please check with a manager first. There will also be a limited amount of farm fruit available during the season. SIO provides apprentices with a lunch allowance per meal cooked for farm group lunches.
Housing: Housing is provided on the farm as part of the compensation package.
How to apply: Please complete and submit the following questions in our apprenticeship application and return them to us along with a cover letter, resume, and three work references. We will be collecting applications November, 2006 through April 2007. We give preference to those who can arrange in person interviews. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have and check our website, www.sauvieislandorganics.com
