Portland’s Children Garden
About:
The Portland Children’s Garden will transform an empty lot in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, into a vibrant community garden where children can play, learn, and connect with nature. In the Portland Children’s Garden, children will have the opportunity to play in the soil, meet native plants, and practice sustainable growing methods. We honor and respect children's innate curiosity and creativity and want them to explore in a safe and nurturing setting. We aim to inspire children to develop a lifelong love and care for the planet by fostering an accessible, welcoming environment that encourages engagement with the natural world.
The Portland Children’s Garden will feature a mix of play features and garden features. Play features will include a well-stocked mud kitchen, a lookout tower where explorers can perch to create imaginary worlds, and a magical fairy garden; garden features will include a dwarf fruit tree orchard, vegetable beds for children to tend, compost, and a native plant habitat designed to provide wildlife food, water, and shelter in the urban fabric.
We look forward to building this garden with you!
Site History:
We are Beth and Amanda, friends and neighbors who live in the Sellwood neighborhood. When we met each other in 2023, we discovered that we have similar dreams. Beth is an art and nature educator and a parent of young children who wants to create a garden for kids. Amanda, a therapist and gardener, wants to create food forests throughout Portland. We were excited when a property in our neighborhood became available in 2024; in 2025, the Portland Children’s Garden became a project of OSALT.
